Formal Anglican Church work was started in the George district in 1845 by the Colonial Chaplain Rev ET Scott who lived in George and held English services in the Dutch Reformed Moederkerk. In other places services were arranged in homes, schoolrooms and magistrates’ offices, and were usually conducted by laymen. In 1847 Robert Gray came to South Africa as the first Colonial Bishop. His Diocese of Cape Town incorporated the whole of Southern Africa, including islands such as St Helena. He word and traveled indefatigably, but it was an impossible task for one man, so Gray dreamed of subdivisions. |
